Media Events - Monday is Officially Funday

Next Monday in London, Alastair Campbell delivers the annual Hugh Cudlipp lecture on the future of the media.  This high profile event will likely be making headlines next week, so go along if you can for a thought-provoking lecture and (if you can bear it) networking opportunities.  All details & where to get tickets here.

Also on Monday 28th BAFTA is hosting a debate on The Reality of Television which looks a hoot.  Kelvin MacKenzie is cast as The Tabloid Editor, and Greg Dyke is cast as The Chief Executive, which shouldn't task them too much.  More details and tickets available here (scroll down a bit)

Both open to all, though at a guess you'd get better snacks at BAFTA.  Or alternatively, make like every other freelancer in town and spend Monday evening wetting yourself about getting your accounts submitted in time.

Media Events - It's All Going On

Lordy, if the weather weren't so biblical out there, a freelancer might never stay home.

This week's Women in Journalism seminar promises to give you the inside scoop on how some of the top female editors made it to their lofty perches.  Also WiJ's Xmas party is coming up on the 29th November (see you there if you're going).  Tickets for both still available, details on the website.

The Rocliffe New Writing Forum takes place at BAFTA in London on Monday 26th November and is open to directors, writers, best boys, trolley dollies etc.  It's a chance to network with the grandest fromages of the UK film industry.  They do fancy peanuts at BAFTA too.  Worth braving the elements for.

And the Brighton-based Women in Media project have their Xmas drinks on 6th December (see you there, provided I have recovered from the WiJ do.  As I get older, recovery takes longer.  I can do staying up late or drinking, but both is a challenge).

BAFTA Event for Freelancers

Just heard about this event for freelancers at BAFTA headquarters in Piccadilly Circus, London.  Sounds like it's aimed at broadcasting freelancers, but others will undoubtedly find it useful too.  Full details & how to secure a place below.

CALLING ALL FREELANCERS

The Broadcast Training and Skills Regulator, in partnership with the Academy, invite you to attend a special event devoted to the issue of freelance training. The event will be chaired by Roger Bolton.

The industry is increasingly dependent on freelancers. So, as the Broadcast Training & Skills Regulator, an important part of our work is looking at how this critical group is able to develop its skills. Time and funds are in short supply, a freelancer’s workload is unpredictable and few have the back up of an employer encouraging them to train. This event will explore the impact of these pressures and will try to identify the effectiveness of any provision currently in place and what improvements need to be made.

It will be a real opportunity for you to share your insights, shape the training available to freelancers, find out how you can get your share of the training fund – and network with over 100 of your freelance colleagues.

Booking: This event is open to freelancers only. To reserve a place in advance, please e-mail events@bafta.org or call 020 7292 5858.
