Someone else said they had an hours wait at customs too - weird because we didn't. Must have been either the fact that we were on the later ferry or that we were earlier off. Good news is it was fine going home - oh apart from the bleugh feeling, thank god for cabins!

I usually travel over via the tunnel as I am as sick as a dog on a boat. If you travel on the motorways there are service stations some are excellent and others well less so but you can look them up on Google or via the Michelin Guide which is excellent if you are travelling in France. Do hope it didn't rain all the time!

@MummyWhisperer - You were very lucky. We had an hour's wait at both ends on the way back, so we got home at half past midnight rather than 10:30.

@TattieWeasle - it was funny about the service stations. We weren't on full blown motorways, but they were pretty big dual carriageways, the sort of roads you'd expect to find somewhere to refuel. Thank heavens for that garage in Rennes, we would've been really stuffed otherwise.
